How To Find A Tutor
Finding a tutor is typically not a terribly difficult task. The problem may actually become too many to choose from. There are many excellent sources of information about tutors, including:
- A student's school. The first, and possibly best, place to start a search for a tutor is a student's school. Start by asking the student's teacher. Their teacher may actually do tutoring on the side. If not, they are likely to know of tutors, or be able to point you to others who know of tutors. The school's guidance counselor or principal would also be excellent individuals to ask about tutors.
- Other parents. Other parents may know of tutors or have experience with tutors. Asking through the PTO might also be a good means of finding information about tutors.
- Tutoring companies or centers. Tutoring companies or centers can be an excellent source of tutors. You should check to see if Huntington Learning, Kaplan, Kuman, Score!, Sylvan, the Princeton Review or others have available locations near you.
- Online searches. Searching online using the keyword "tutor" will yield many sites that can help to locate a tutor in your area and for your particular need. More specific keywords such as "math tutor" or "reading tutor" can be helpful in trying to limit the search results.
- Craigslist. Craigslist is an excellent resource for locating tutors.
- Newspaper or phone directory. Your local newspaper or a phone directory can also be good resources to help in locating a tutor.
Once you have identified an available pool of tutors the harder part begins - determining which one is right for your situation. The process of selection is most often more difficult than locating a tutor. See What to Look For In A Tutor in this article series for assistance in selecting a tutor.
