About The PSAT NMSQT

The PSAT/NMSQT is the preliminary SAT and the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The test is co-sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The College Board is an association of over 5,000 schools, colleges, universities, and other educational organizations whose mission "is to connect students to college success and opportunity". The National Merit Scholarship Corporation is a non-profit organization that conducts the National Merit Scholarship Program, and the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

The PSAT/NMSQT is a standardized test that serves two purposes:

  1. The PSAT/NMSQT provides practice for the SAT Reasoning Test
  2. The PSAT/NMSQT provides individuals with the chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs

Similar to the SAT Reasoning Test, the PSAT/NMSQT measures critical reading skills, math skills, and writing skills. The test is two hours and ten minutes long and is divided into five section, which include: two twenty-five minute critical reading sections, two twenty-five minute math sections, and one thirty minute writing skills section.

Where the PSAT/NMSQT Test Is Offered

The PSAT/NMSQT is not offered through testing centers. It is administered by high schools. Students take the test through a local high school.

Registering for the PSAT/NMSQT

Online registration is not available for the PSAT/NMSQT. Students should contact their school's guidance counselor or principal to find out dates, times, fees, and registration procedures.

When to Take the PSAT/NMSQT

Most students take the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall of their junior year of high school.

PSAT/NMSQT Scores

Each section on the PSAT/NMSQT is scored on a 20 to 80 scale. A "Selection Index" on a scale of 60 to 240 is also reported. The Selection Index is simply the sum of the three individuals scores. Also reported on the PSAT/NMSQT score report is a percentile ranking, or how an individual did as compared to others taking the test.

According to the College Board, the average scores for each of the three sections for juniors is 49. The average Selection Index is 147.
