PRAXIS II

The PRAXIS II: Subject Assessments are designed to measure the knowledge of the subjects that a teacher is going to teach. They consist of groups of tests broken down into four categories:

  1. Multiple Subject Assessment for Teachers (MSAT) - The intent of the MSAT test is to assess knowledge and high order thinking skills.
  2. Principals of Learning Tests (PLT) - These tests measure general teaching skill knowledge at four grade levels: Early Childhood, K-6, 5-9, and 7-12.
  3. Subject Assessment/Specialty Area Tests - These tests measure subject-specific teaching skills and knowledge.
  4. Teaching Foundation Tests - These tests measure teaching skills in five areas: elementary (multi-subject), English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

The PRAXIS II tests are intended to be taken by prospective teachers as they are entering the profession. They are used by many teacher licensing or certification boards (typically a state's Department of Education) as one of the requirements for obtaining a teaching license or certificate.

Format of the PRAXIS II

PRAXIS II tests are one, two, three, or four hour tests. Unlike the PRAXIS I tests, PRAXIS II tests are all paper-based. The PRAXIS II tests consist of multiple-choice, and essay or constructed-response questions.

PRAXIS II Score

The Educational Testing Service does not set the passing score for the PRAXIS II tests. Passing scores are set by individual states, institutions, or organizations that require the test. The ETS maintains an up-to-date list of passing scores by licensing organization on their web site. When reporting the score to a test taker, the ETS will provide passing score information for those organizations that the test taker listed on their registration form. Scores are mailed approximately four weeks after the test date. Scores are automatically sent to organizations or agencies that a test taker has indicated on their registration from. In addition, in many states, the scores are also automatically reported to the State Department of Education

PRAXIS II Test Dates and Locations

The PRAXIS Tests are delivered in hundreds of locations numerous times throughout the year. You should consult the ETS web site for test dates and the most current list of test locations. Registration for the PRAXIS II may be done on-line at the ETS web site.

ETS Recognition of Excellence Award

The Educational Testing Service has an "ETS Recognition of Excellence" program to recognize teacher candidates who demonstrate a high degree of proficiency on PRAXIS II tests. The program is available for 11 of the most commonly taken PRAXIS II tests. These tests include:

To earn an ETS Recognition of Excellence Award, a test taker must achieve a score equal to or greater than the ROE (Recognition of Excellence) target score. This ROE score is a scaled score earned by the top 15 percent of test takers who took the test in the past five years. Test takers who earn this award will automatically receive a congratulatory letter and recognition certificate from the ETS.
