PRAXIS I Academic Skills Assessments

The PRAXIS I: Academic Skills Assessments consists of three Pre-Professional Skills Tests (PPST) to measure reading, writing, and mathematics skills. They are intended to be taken early in a student's college career. Some colleges and universities may require the tests as a requirement for admissions into their teacher training programs. They are also used by many teacher licensing or certification boards (typically a state's Department of Education) as one of the requirements for obtaining a teaching license or certificate.

Format of the PRAXIS I

The three Pre-Professional Skills Tests may either be taken individually or together as a combined test. The PPST in Reading and Math consist of multiple choice questions. The PPST in Writing consists of multiple choice questions and a written essay. The Pre-Professional Skills Tests are delivered in two different formats: paper-based and computer-based. The PRAXIS I: Computerized Pre-Professional Skills Test is delivered in four timed sections and has a total test length of 2 hours for each individual computerized PPST or 4½ hours for the combined PPST. The format of each computerized PPST section is as follows:

Computerized PPST Number of Questions Time
Reading 46 multiple-choice questions 75 minutes
Mathematics 46 multiple-choice questions 75 minutes
Writing 44 multiple-choice questions
1 essay
38 minutes
30 minutes

The additional time over the allotted time for any of the Computerized PPST's is used for tutorials and the collection of background information.

The paper-based test is similar in format:

Paper-Based PPST Number of Questions Time
Reading 40 multiple-choice questions 60 minutes
Mathematics 40 multiple-choice questions 60 minutes
Writing 38 multiple-choice questions
1 essay
30 minutes
30 minutes

It should be noted that calculators may not be used on the Math Pre-Professional Skills Test.

PRAXIS I Score

The Educational Testing Service does not set the passing score for the PRAXIS I PPSTs. Passing scores are set by individual states, institutions, or organizations that require the test. The ETS maintains an up-to-date list of passing scores by licensing organization on their web site. When reporting the score to a test taker, the ETS will provide passing score information for those organizations that the test taker listed on their registration form. Scores for computer-based PPSTs are delivered approximately two to three weeks after the test date. Scores for the paper-bases PPSTs are mailed approximately four weeks after the test date. Scores are automatically sent to organizations or agencies that a test taker has indicated on their registration from. In addition, in many states the scores are also automatically reported to the State Department of Education

PRAXIS I PPST Test Dates and Locations

The PRAXIS Tests are delivered in hundreds of locations numerous times throughout the year. You should consult the ETS web site for test dates and the most current list of test locations. Registration for the PRAXIS I may be done either on-line at the ETS web site or by calling a toll-free number (1-800-853-6773) for the computerized tests.
