The GRE test is a test taken prior to applying to graduate schools. Many graduate schools require applicants to provide GRE test scores as part of their application. Schools use these scores as one measurement (among many) of the student's chances of success in a graduate degree program. Many schools require that applicants provide scores for the GRE General Test, and some schools will also require the applicant to provide a score for one or more GRE subject tests.

The GRE General Test measures a students verbal skills, quantitative analysis skills, and their analytical writing skills. The test does not attempt to measure subject matter learning, but instead focuses on measuring learning related skills. The GRE Subject Tests measure knowledge in specific subject areas. There are subject tests for 8 different disciplines.

The GRE General Test can be taken at a testing center using a computer. The test is no longer avialable in paper format. The GRE test takes 3 1/4 hours. The computer based test uses adaptive questioning to make the questions get harder as a student demonstrates proficiency, and easier whenever a student starts to have difficulty with the test. This structure allows the GRE test to perform a more accurate measurement of a student's capability.

As with most types of standardized testing, many students can benefit greatly from advance preparation. GRE test preparation can provide several specific benefits to a student:
