About The GMAT

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a standardized test designed to help business schools in deciding which students to admit to their MBA or other graduate management programs. The test is administered by the Education Testing Service (ETS) and is used as one method to predict the future performance of business students. Because of a proven relationship between high scores on the GMAT and success in graduate school, many schools require applicants to take the test. This site, About-GMAT-Prep.com, has been created to present information on the GMAT and to help students improve their score on the test.

The GMAT lasts almost four hours and measures the abilities of test-takers in a number of areas, including:

The GMAT is composed of three sections:

The Analytical Writing Assessment is the first section of the test, and it requires test-takers to complete two separate written essays. One essay is within the category of Analysis of an Issue, and the other is in the category Analysis of an Argument. Students are allowed 30 minutes per essay to type their response into the computer.

The Quantitative Section is the second section of the GMAT. It lasts 75 minutes, and includes 37 multiple-choice questions from two categories - Data Sufficiency and Problem Solving. The section covers basic arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, and most questions are at the high school level. Knowledge of advanced mathematics is not necessary for this section.

The Verbal Section, the final section of the test, is also 75 minutes long and includes 41 multiple-choice questions in three areas - Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning, and Sentence Correction. The student's ability to comprehend written material, reason and evaluate arguments, and recognize grammatical rules is evaluated in this section. The questions range in difficulty from easy to very difficult.

GMAT prep work can take many forms. Students can prep for the test by taking practice tests and/or seeking tutorial help. GMAT tutors can help a student prep for the test by helping them find their weaknesses, and then helping them learn the material to improve their scores in those areas.
