ACT English Test
ACT English Test: The ACT English test covers basic English grammar and rhetorical skills. The English grammar portion of the test makes up 53% of the English test score. To do well in the grammar section, the student must have a strong vocabulary, know the rules of grammar (for example: punctuation and sentence structure), and have strong spelling skills. The rhetorical portion makes up 47% of the English test, and tests a students understanding of writing (selecting writing strategy, ability to organize a written response and good writing style).
The ACT English test consists of 5 essays and 75 multiple choice questions about those essays. The stundet will have 45 minutes to complete this portion od the test. The questions will refer to the essays and ask specific questions that relate to underlined and/or numbered parts of the essay. All questions are multiple choice and require the student to pick the best choice. This can be tough at times, because for many of the questions there may be more than one correct choice, but the student's job is to pick the better answer.
Prior preparation provides a student with a strong advantage in taking the ACT English Test. Knowing what to expect on test day will save the student considerable time and stress. Knowing what the directions are, and knowing what kinds of answers are expected are invaluable.
For example, questions on the rhetorical portion of the ACT English test may require the student to pick from a list of suggested replacement passages to include in one of the essays. The student must know to avoid picking a passage that provides redundant information. In addition, there may be mutiple correct answers, but one of the correct answers may not match the writing style of the original essay (and therefore would be wrong). Advance exposure to these issues can be invaluable on improcing a student's score.
